Week 6, Session 2 // Final Brochure Hand In

01/04/14
End

After everything here is the final brochure:

The image is meant to be black and white but for some reason blogger is making it tinted and I can't change it

Week 6, Session 1 // Final Critique, Printing, Rationale

31/03/14
Critique / Make

I got some last minute critique from a tutor and my peers, made some final changes and then went to the print shop. I picked a 170gsm matte paper as I felt it was a nice thickness for the brochure and I couldn't have anything glossy as there is sketch space in the back and you can't draw on that too well.

We also went over writing a rationale in class.

After much refinement and critiques from tutors and classmates I came up with these as the final three site spreads, until I come up with the other spreads anyway.

Week 5, Session 2 // Class Critique

25/03/14
Critique

I didn't have time to change my spreads from yesterday but I still got them critiqued. The main points were that I should change up the composition between spreads and to tone down the colour a bit as it is very dominating.

Week 5, Session 1 // Spread Set one and Flow

24/03/14
Understand / Make / Ideate

I ended up creating a set of the three spreads from the chosen style. In class we then talked about flow and now I know what I need to change to make the spreads work better.

Emotive Feel and Site Specific Inspirational Stylistic Approaches

16/03/14
Understand, Ideate, Define

I wanted to define a real refined few points for each site, like getting an emotive feel for each, deciding on a shape and coming up with some ways that I could get this across through design. This was so that I could gather some site specific inspirational stylistic approaches and start my designs.

Brochure Research

14/03/14
Understand / Define

I went down to the local i-Site and picked up a whole bunch of brochures to analyse and get some inspiration. I looked at the composition of the covers and how much information they showed and how they convey the feel of the topic of the brochure. I also looked at different spread compositions within the brochures and how they use FADP to convey a certain feel. I also looked at the maps in the brochures to get some different options for designing my map and to see how much detail is too much detail.

Week 3, Session 2 // InDesign and First Concept

11/03/14
Understand, Ideate, Make, Critique

Today we looked at grid in class and I did a lot of sketches experimenting with compositions with a grid.

I also went to a workshop on InDesign and then came up with my first concept for a spread style.

I showed my classmates and got some feedback about how the general flow and composition wasn't really working and how the boat symbol doesn't look like a boat. I have now made those changes.

InDesign was very hard to get the hang of so I think I'm going to use photoshop for now until I have a solid style and idea for the spreads, then I can easily make them on InDesign.

Week 3, Session 1 // Inspirational Stylistic Approaches, Colour Study

10/03/14
Understand / Ideate

I have been researching into current brochures and other graphic designs on the internet which could be directions for my brochure.

I also looked at photos from the sites and pulled colours from them to try and get a main colour for each that I can use in the spreads to differentiate the sites.

Week 2, Session 2 // Key / Symbols

04/03/14
Ideate / Make

I decided on my secondary communication points being when the building was built/age, a sustainability rating and use. I then designed the symbols which will go on each of the three main spreads to indicate these points.

Finalising Idea

01/03/14
Understand / Ideate / Define

Today I managed to finalise my destination set point of differences, adjectives and secondary communication points and source my written content for the three sites (from archdaily.com and the dominion museum website).

I also asked an architect what he might look for, information wise, in an architecture brochure. The main points were; sustainability, location, age, style/era, architect, use and materials. I then went back and altered my secondary communication points. From this I came up with some ideas for my final spread, maybe a bio on the architects, some sketch/note space, other buildings of interest nearby things to do at the locations.
